When she’s not cooking for family and friends, Faye Kerns turns to another love—gardening.
Faye Kerns of Sierra Madre, California, likes “the ‘socialness’ of cooking—the conversation and the getting together with people. You know,” she says, “you can even have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and have it be social.
“I always welcome help in the kitchen and I like to know what people think of the dish I have prepared for them. They have to be honest! That helps improve the dish next time around.”
Although Faye’s mother never spent much time with her in the kitchen, Faye made sure that cooking was a “social” affair when her six children were growing up.
“I designed our kitchen with a stove in the middle of the room. Counters surrounded it on all sides. Our children would huddle around and put in their two cents worth. When we made pizza, each kid had their own section to put on whatever toppings they wanted. It was fun!
“When the kids were a little older I would always cook a little extra because you never knew who they might be bringing home for dinner. Everyone was welcome.”
Faye’s no-fuss Spaghetti Sauce was the perfect solution to those drop-in dinners. “You can never be without a spaghetti sauce!” she reminds.
As Faye says, "You can never be without a spaghetti sauce!"
Heat a medium stockpot over medium-high heat. Add the meat and brown thoroughly. Drain off any fat. Add the crushed tomatoes, onion, ITALIAN HERB and GARLIC POWDER. Stir well. Reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour. Cook the spaghetti according to package directions and serve topped with the sauce.
