Patti Jones enjoys satisfying her husband Paul's sweet tooth with treats such as Applesauce Loaf.

"To me there is no greater satisfaction than seeing those I cook for enjoy eating what I have prepared," says Patti Jones from her home in rural Springfield Township, New Jersey. "My sons Christopher, Ryan and Andrew Conover all have their favorites for me to cook or bake for them. I have always made their favorite meals for their birthday dinners. They are all grown up now, but I still enjoy watching them enjoying their favorites.

"I love to bake batches of banana bread, zucchini bread and Applesauce Loaf (see the recipe below) and share them with friends and family. I always bake extras to send home with those that come to Thanksgiving dinner…and there are usually Christmas goodies to share as well.

"To me, cooking is family and time well spent together. How many nice family conversations have been had over dessert? I always tell my friends, when you are cooking you must add the love! That is my cooking mantra and I truly believe that is the most important ingredient. It is definitely my secret ingredient!"

Applesauce Loaf

Patti shares, "I serve this with cream cheese. Enjoy!"

  • 1/2 Cup butter (1 stick)
  • 1 Cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 11/2 Cups all-purpose flour
  • 11/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. GROUND NUTMEG
  • 1/4 tsp. GROUND CLOVES
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 11/4 Cups applesauce
  • 1/2 Cup raisins
  • 1/2 Cup chopped walnuts

Preheat oven to 350°. Grease and flour a 9x5 loaf pan and set aside. Cream together the butter and sugar until fluffy. Beat in the egg. In a separate bowl, stir together the flour, baking soda, CINNAMON, NUTMEG, CLOVES and salt. Gradually add to the creamed mixture. Beat in the applesauce and VANILLA. Fold in the raisins and walnuts. Pour into the loaf pan and bake at 350° for 60-70 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes in the pan and then remove, let cool, slice and serve.
