Story and Recipe

Sally takes in the view at beautiful Rockefeller Gardens on Mt. Desert Island off the coast of Maine.

Saucepan Scotchies are great for a snack anytime…and they travel well too, says Sally K. Field.

She should know—she and her husband Dave recently returned from a two-week trip to visit children and grandchildren. “We drove from our home in Hampden, Maine, to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, putting on 3,500 miles,” she says. “It was wonderful to see the variety of scenery in this beautiful country.

“Our grandchildren, who are six and three, are at a very busy age,” she adds. “They have lots of room to run and enjoy nature. ‘Buck’ the deer is a frequent visitor to their yard and gives the kids a glimpse into nature that they will not find in any book.

“But after two weeks on the road, it was nice to be home. We have a lovely stream at the foot of the hill on our property…and a screened-in porch for enjoying the view.”

It’s the perfect spot, too, for munching on Sally’s delicious sweet treats. “I made these Scotchies often for our children when I was still working,” she says. “We all love things with brown sugar in them, and stirring them up is no big deal. Easy and good taste, too—what more could you ask?”
