And our customer L.H. yesterday sent a disappointed yet kindly email about us not yet addressing the killing of Tyre Nichols by the police in Memphis. She encouraged: “How a simple acknowledgment can positively impact and support those in the customer base that are not in the majority.”
Part of this Groundhog Day is indeed once again America coming face-to-face with the racism that is in our lives. I am so sorry for all of this. I’m pretty sure we need more than acknowledgement, but thanks for the encouragement to start there. We are working on doing something more. I’m working and reworking the ideas in my head about all of this to hopefully use our Voice Of Cooking to help bring healing and change.
So far my mind keeps finding itself returning to how could the movement for Black Lives that was still so very successful seemingly just months ago now have pretty much disappeared? I’m not sure if we didn’t take a misstep by focusing on racism as institutional. I get it, and it’s not wrong, but somehow in going intellectual and leaving the emotion behind we’ve lost too much. Yes, the system is racist, but the system is nothing more than all of us. We are the racism. Either we acknowledge this and fight against it or we are the problem.
We move through emotion, and when it comes to overcoming racism we clearly still have so very much to move. Thanks L.H. for your kind email. I am so sorry for how deeply unfair this time we live in still is. It’s a failure of our humanity. As Cooks we have chosen the path of humanity. We have to do better. We simply have to. We will find our way to do more. We will keep you updated.
